WRYTING-L CHANGEiOVER AUGUST 1

Via: Alan Sondheim

.

WRYTING-L

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the WRYTING-L change-over will occur
on August 1, 2006. As of that date, WRYTING-L will be hosted at West
Virginia University. The current hosting at University of Toronto and
the current list address will no longer be available. We thank
University of Toronto for its support of the list. The current
subscriber list and archive are already transferred to the new host. The
aim and moderation of the list will be maintained unchanged. The list
moderator will continue to be Alan Sondheim, with additional management
by Sandy Baldwin.

The new list address will be WRYTING-L@listserv.wvu.edu and all
postings must go to that address from August 1, 2006 onward. The online
archive address will be http://listserv.wvu.edu/archives/wryting-l.html.
Please update your booksmarks, address book, and so on. We will re-send
this announcement several times as a reminder to subscribers. We will
also circulate the revised description of WRYTING-L to other lists and
net venues.

- Alan Sondheim and Sandy Baldwin

::

The revised description of WRYTING-L is as follows:

As the open spaces of the internet narrow between bureaucracy and
greed, email lists become ever more important. The aim of WRYTING-L is
to maintain a balance between dissemination and conversation, to offer
the possibility of a space of writing not overdetermined by academic
rule, party line or limit of genre. All kinds of writing and discussion
are welcome. The list is run with a minimum of management by Alan
Sondheim and Sandy Baldwin, and is open to all.

WRYTING-L is an email list for theory and writing, focusing on texts
and comments presented by the participants. The list is managed out of
the Center for Literary Computing at the West Virginia University. It is
open to anyone, in or outside the University. The object is to provide
a forum for writing and theory that may not fit within the confines of a
particular discipline, in recognition of the recent interest in
operating between and across theories and genres in the humanities and
beyond.

We're interested in all sorts of issues - 'avant-garde' pieces,
psychoanalytical, phenomenological, or deconstructive approaches, etc.

Wryting is cross-platform, cross-gender, cross-reason; it may involve
embodiments of reader and writer, codework and sestinas, abstract
language, the collapse of genre.

If you are working with images, please give a URL; they won't come
through the list. If you are working on an extremely long piece, you
might want to give a URL as well (there is a 500-line limit on every
post).

WRYTING-L stems from the older fiction-of-philosophy list, which
presented work between literature and theory, fiction and poetry,
philosophy and lyric, and so forth. Any discussion and original work is
welcome. To join send the message

World Premiere screening NICE BOMBS Opens Chicago Underground Film Festival

.
Hello friends,

The 13th Chicago Underground Film Festival is just around the corner
(August 17-24th at the Music Box Theatre). We’re currently
updating our website and the complete festival schedule will be
available there very soon. But we wanted to let you all know about
the great WORLD PREMIERE screening we have slated for opening night.

The 2006 Chicago Underground Film Festival Kicks Off with the World
Premiere of the documentary feature‘ NICE BOMBS’ by
Chicago based filmmaker Usama Alshaibi’. The film is
Usama’s personal story documenting his return to Baghdad to
reunite with his family after nearly 24 years. In January 2004,
shortly after becoming an American citizen, Usama journeyed with his
wife Kristie from Chicago to Baghdad where he was reunited with
family members, friends and former neighbors in an Iraq much
different than the country of his childhood. Inspired by writer Studs
Terkel and Internet diarist Salaam Pax, he explores with humor and
resilience the culture, customs and complex politics of Iraqis in a
post-Saddam era. All the while, the United States occupation remains
a constant presence in the background. Capturing the conflicting
reactions to the conditions of life in Baghdad. Through a wide range
of opinions and experiences he provides a broad panorama of voices
long neglected under Saddam’s regime.

“The sound of a ground-shaking explosion awoke my wife and I
from a deep sleep. It was about 7:00 in the morning. My cousin Tareef
entered the bedroom to find a tie for work. “What was
that?” I asked. “It was a bomb. A nice bomb.” The
phrase was indicative of my family’s nonchalance about their
situation. I had been away for twenty-four years. They were used to
it. As one young boy put it, “We’re Iraqis. It’s
normal.”

My Arabic is weak so I spoke to my relatives in English, both on and
off camera. I was surprised that, despite the language barrier, their
meaning clearly broke through. I thought that most Iraqis would be
reluctant to speak openly. It had been rumored that Saddam executed
people for simply making jokes about him and they were accustomed to
holding their tongues. The opposite was true. Everyone wanted to
speak, and they wanted Americans to hear them.

I left in 1980 in the midst of a war between Iraq and Iran. I was
eleven years old and terrified of dying. The current war gave me an
opportunity to return and revisit my birthplace and my family, and to
explore a culture in which I feel both rooted and uprooted. I was
frightened, but I felt that I had to go and see what TV and
newspapers could not convey. I brought my camera along to document
the experience.” – Usama Alshaibi

Following Nice Bombs please join us for our opening night party at
Schubas (3159 N Southport) with musical guests Bobby Conn and the
Glass Gypsies, Roommate and DJ Hunter Hussar

Arse Electronica: Pornography And Technological Innovation

Call For Everything

---> http://www.monochrom.at/arse-electronica/

From the depiction of a vulva in a cave painting to the newest
internet porno, technology and sexuality have always been closely
linked. No one can predict what the future will bring, but history
indicates that sex will continue to play an essential role in
technological development.

monochrom wants to organize a international conference with experts
from the fields of science, economics, art and technology and an
exhibition featuring international artists and designers.

We are looking for: speakers, designers, artists, funding, location
(probably on the West Coast of the US?).

monochrom:
"We're great together, the liberal society and it's enemies"
A gala at Zeke's Gallery
July 29, 7:30
3955 Saint Laurent Montreal, Quebec H2W 1Y4 (514) 288-2233
http://zekesgallery.blogspot.com/

monochrom from Vienna is a worldwide operating collective dealing with
technology, art, context hacking and philosophy and was founded in 1993. So
to sum up, monochrom is an unpeculiar mixture of proto-aesthetic fringe
work, pop attitude, subcultural science and political activism. Their
mission is conducted everywhere, but first and foremost in
culture-archeological digs into the seats (and pockets) of ideology and
entertainment.

monochrom released a leftist retro-gaming project, established a 1 baud
semaphore line through the streets of San Francisco, started an illegal
space race through Los Angeles, buried people alive in Vancouver, and
cracked the hierarchies of the art system with The Thomann Project. In
Austria they ate blood sausages made from their own blood in order to
criticize the grotesque neoliberal formation of the world economy.
Sometimes they compose melancholic pop songs about dying media and host the
first annual and inevitably leading festival concerned with cocktail
robotics. At the moment they're planning a conference about pornography as
one of the the driving forces of technological innovation. Also they do
international soul trade, propaganda camps, epic puppet theatre, aesthetic
pregnancy counselling, food catering and -- sorry to mention -- modern dance.

monochroms talk medley at Zeke's Gallery is a little tour-de-farce about
their projects and political motivation. A joyful bucket full of good clean
fanaticism, crisis, language, culture, self-content, identity, utopia,
mania and despair, condensed into the well known cultural technique of a
gala show. Powernapping highly welcome.
