FIRST INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGY
5-7 September 2007; Graz, Austria
http://i-media.tugraz.at/
Media technologies are currently facing challenges and opportunities
arising from a number of trends: Under the Web 2.0 umbrella, social
aspects of software are gaining importance, and a new focus on simplicity
in user interface design is taking hold. New display devices (e.g.
e-paper) and client software (e.g. geo-browsers) revolutionize the
production and consumption of media products. At the same time, semantic
technologies are maturing to the point of broad adoption.
Acknowledging these fundamental changes, I-MEDIA will bring together
researchers, technology start-ups and established media companies in a
multi-disciplinary setting to discuss and shape the future of media
technology.
Kind regards,
Frank Kappe, Arno Scharl, Klaus Tochtermann, Werner Haas

*The Leonardo Electronic Almanac (ISSN No: 1071-4391) is inviting papers =
and
artworks that address dispersion - dispersion of bodies, objects,
landscapes, networks, virtual and real worlds.
A fundamental shift in the way we view the world is underway: the
abandonment of discrete objects, and objecthood itself. The world is now
plural, and the distinction between real and virtual is becoming
increasingly blurred, with troubling consequences within the geopolitical
register. This shift is related to a cultural change that emphasizes =
digital
deconstruction over analog construction: a photograph for example can be
accessed and transformed, pixel by pixel, cities can be taken apart by
gerrymandering or eminent domain, and our social networks are replete with
names and images that problematize friendship, sexuality, and culture
itself. One issue that emerges here: Are we networking or are we networked?=
Are we networks ourselves?
LEA is interested in texts and works that deal with this fundamental shift
in new and illuminating ways. Specifically, anything from essays through
multimedia through networks themselves may be considered. We're particularl=
y
interested in submissions that deal with the incoherency of the world, and
how to address it.

Turbulence Commission: "Urban Attractors, Private Distractors" by Angie Eng
in collaboration with Rich Streitmatter-Tran and a collective of student
interns in New York and Ho Chi Minh City
http://turbulence.org/uapd/
"Urban Attractors and Private Distractors" is a vlog project about privacy
in public space in Eastern culture. It compares the results of dérives
(French for "drift," dérive was defined by the Situationists as the
"technique of locomotion without a goal") in Ho Chi Minh and New York City.
The collective will address questions such as: How is a city constructed in
a culture where the inhabitants have little experience of a private physical
space? Do they adapt more readily to cyberspace which is both private/public
simultaneously? How do Westerners reclaim their 'public space'? Organized
dérives in both cities will commence at the most public of spaces--the town
square. Participants will submit videos as urban indicators of private
and/or public to the vlog until the workshop meetings in June 2007. Angie
Eng, the project director, will continue vlogging until the commencement of
the physical installation in Fall 2007.
"Urban Attractors, Private Distractors" is a 2007 commission of New Radio
and Performing Arts, Inc., (aka Ether-Ore) for its Turbulence web site. It
was made possible with funding from the Jerome Foundation.

Rock *N* Scroll in der Innenstadt
Performance zum Mitmachen von Medienkünstlerin Annina Rüst
Oldenburg. Am Freitag, 30. März, will die Medienkünstlerin Annina Rüst
will, kann mitmachen.
http://www.rocknscroll.net
Die gebürtige Schweizerin Annina Rüst arbeitet zurzeit als Research
Assistant in der Computing Culture Group am MIT Media Lab in Boston,
USA.

Rock *N* Scroll in the city centre
Performance with audience participation by media artist Annina Rüst
Oldenburg. On Friday, 30 March 2007 Annina Rüst is going to turn
laptops into musical instruments using her software *Rock *N*
Scroll* at two places in the city centre of Oldenburg, to rhythmically
move and make music with laptop-users. Everyone is invited to
participate. *Just use your mouse as rattle, your keyboard as drum
kit, and your mobile as microphone and make music!* the artist asks
the inner city public.
The first performance is taking place at 2 p.m at the Café Loft,
Baumgartenstraße 2. Other performances are planned at 4 p.m at other
sites in the city centre. This event is part of the program accompanying
the exhibition Sound//Bytes_electrical and digital sound scapes, which
is shown at the Edith-Russ-Site for Media Art until 15 April 2007.
Coffee shops, shopping malls and other semi-public places are often
already equipped with wireless internet, allowing not only to meet and
socialise but also to work there. *Imagine entering such a place and
instead of sitting fixedly in front of their computers users perform
rhythmic movements with their equipment*, says Annina Rüst. Optical
mice are used for DJ-like scratching motions, joysticks and mechanical
mice serve as rhythmic instruments, keyboards become drum kits and
mobile phones turn into microphones. Both mobile phones and computers
are connected using Skype voice-over-IP telephony (VOIP) software, so
that everyone present can participate in the spontaneous *jam
session* with his or her own equipment. For more information see:

Swiss born Annina Rüst at the moment works as a Research Assistant for
the Computing Culture Group at MIT Media Lab in Boston, USA. Her
software *Rock *N* Scroll* was developed in 2006 while the
artist received a work stipend from the Edith Russ Site for Media Art.
The user instructions for Annina Rüst*s software *Rock *N*
Scroll* have been printed on a mouse pad. Of this first edition 30
copies, hand-signed by the artist, have been issued. They are available

National Character of Geometric Abstraction
feat. trashconnection.com
Roman Minaev
Nationalstolzes.

Arien für Alle! | Arias for All!
Opernhaus verbunden.
Was bisher geschah: In den letzten beiden Wochen hat Opera Calling zehn
Opernaufführungen an 1489 Haushalte übertragen.

Arias for All!
Dear friends of the 8KHz Opera retransmission
Opera Calling, the intervention into the Zurich Opera, is still up and
running! Through audio-bugs placed within the auditorium of the opera
house, the outside public is given free (as in free speach not free
beer) access to the performances on stage. The performances are
retransmitted to the public not through broadcasting, but by telephoning
each person in Zurich individually.
And since «man was born a spectator» the show will go on.
The story so far: For the last two weeks Opera Calling has retransmitted
ten live performances of the Zurich opera to 1489 households in Zurich.
The Zurich Opera claims to have found and destroyed 2 bugs. With the Opera
in frantical mode and an unknown number of bugs still
to find the *spectacle* continues...
People at home have been most charmed by the exceptional experience
brought to them by the telephone opera. If the opera has not yet called
y-ou, you can hear phone calls from past transmission directly on the
call-out-machine at the Cabaret Voltaire or listen to examples on
